Waterways restoration experts Hargreaves Lock Gates have installed new lock gates for a Grade ll listed lock on Cambridge’s River Cam.

The Major Repair Programme at Salisbury Cathedral

It was in 1986 that the then Clerk of Works at Salisbury Cathedral, Roy Spring, first identified the huge amount of the work which would need to done on the beautiful and ancient medieval cathedral to conserve it for future generations.  That work was subsequently titled the Major Repair Programme, or MRP.  Four years later, in 1990, The Spire Appeal was set up under the patronage of the Prince of Wales and the massive undertaking began in earnest.

Heritage Lottery Fund invests £10.5m in four places of historic significance

Today, the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has announced confirmed funding¹ for four projects in Scotland, Wales and England: 

Sir Walter Scott’s home, ‘Abbotsford’, in the Borders; Newbridge Memorial Hall in Caerphilly; a Tudor dwelling house known as ‘The Walronds’ in Devon; and the 18th-century Wrest Park in Bedfordshire.  Initial support² has also been awarded for projects in Staffordshire, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Suffolk and Worcestershire.

Sir Walter Scott's Abbotsford House to become Scottish tourist gem in £10 million masterplan

"The appeal of Scott played a huge part in the success of the Year of Homecoming, generating £10 million for the national economy and demonstrating the continuing international appeal of the man and his writing almost 200 years after his death."

Lord Sanderson, whose Abbotsford Trust has managed the landmark since 2004, said the development would create "a financially viable, world-class visitor attraction that will bring lasting economic and cultural benefit."
