Although we can prepare quotations from photographs we prefer to arrange a site visit - usually free of charge and obligation depending on location to assess the condition of the stained glass or leaded lights. We prepare a comprehensive report supported by photographs and from this information prepare a quotation for either on site repair or removal and repair - whichever is appropriate.
Where there are broken individual pieces of glass but the leadwork is undamaged the repair may be effected in situ by replacing the damaged glass with new glass as similar as possible in colour and texture and weatherproofing with black putty.
Where the damage is more severe or the panels buckled or leadwork deteriorating we would remove the affected panel and fit temporary glazing. At our studios remedial action might involve just cleaning, flattening and recementing the panel or completely stripping and remaking it, using new lead came of similar profile
to the original and replacing any damaged glass with new glass as similar as possible to the original - sourced from our vast stock of either antique or machine made glass The rebuilt panel cemented to a weatherproof finish, polished and where necessary fitted with new copper tie wires ready for reinstallation.
To restore damaged stained glass panels it is sometimes necessary to replace broken pieces of painted and stained glass. Having selected appropriate glass we paint and stain as necessary in the original style using traditional methods unchanged for centuries and kiln fire the glass to fuse the paint and stain permanently into the glass surface before proceeding with the leading process.
When finished the refurbished glass is returned to site and reinstalled matching the original fixing method and where appropriate tieing on to either new or replacement tie bars. Unless matching existing bars we prefer to use brass bars as they do not cause staining or splitting of the stone or brick work. On completion the work area is left in a clean and tidy condition.
Window protection may be achieved by using either stainless steel wire guards or polycarbonate sheet formed or cut to shape and installed using stainless steel fixings to avoid rust staining or expansion damage to stone or brick work.
Please note we are on the list of approved studios held by major ecclesiastical insurance companies.
