East Midlands Family Company Lights up Region’s Churches

In 1919 Ken Burrows established his business in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire and was responsible for the installation of electricity into many buildings in the area. The company remains the ‘oldest established electrical contractor in the town’ with an office and workshop on Ogle Street.

The company has grown over the years and has built its reputation on standards, service and reliability. It is now led by MD Andrew Stone and Commercial Director Clare Stone, and since 2000 after an installation of church floodlighting for the Millennium, has been offering electrical services to the church and heritage sector across the East Midlands.

The company undertakes all electrical renovations, additions, extensions, testing or complete electrical rewires including audio and induction loop systems in churches, heritage and listed buildings. They appreciate the need for sympathetic restoration in historic buildings and can advise on discreet lighting or scene setting lighting to suit a particular building's needs and uses. Advice can also be given on floodlighting the exterior of a building to enhance its surroundings and provide illumination where desired.

Here are some examples of recent projects in the region

ST JOHNS CHURCH, CARRINGTON, NOTTINGHAM

This project was carried out in conjunction with Paul Mendham a local stonemason who has considerable experience on heritage renovation projects. Ken Burrows Ltd. was responsible for the complete electrical refurbishment of the church, which encompassed the electrical power and lighting, fire alarm, audio and induction loop systems.

ST MARY'S CHURCH, EDWINSTOWE, NOTTINGHAM

The company was delighted to have the opportunity of re-lighting this Grade 1 listed building situated in the heart of Sherwood Forest. The scheme was designed by Building Design Partnership at their Birmingham offices. Ken Burrows Ltd had already worked with BDP on a previous heritage electrical heating project. BDP offer a multitude of architect design services including Historic Building Projects.

ST MARY AND ALL SAINTS CHURCH, CHESTERFIELD, DERBYSHIRE

The iconic 'Crooked Spire' landmark in the town was a recent destination for the electricians where they carried out an Electrical Installation Condition Report. This is a five yearly requirement for churches and highlights any departures from the current electrical regulations and any necessary remedial works essential to maintain the safety of the electrical installation.

Additional electrical works were completed earlier this year at the ‘Crooked Spire’ when the company worked with John C Goom Architects, Evesham on the installation of ceiling down-lighters and a bespoke illuminated Cross of Light which is suspended above the Holy Cross Chapel.
